What
is there to Do and See?
The Historic Stewart Farm depicts the turn of the century life
of the Stewarts, one of Surrey’s leading pioneer families.
This picturesque and unique heritage site is located on the banks
of the Nicomekl River. Its 1894 Victorian farmhouse and grounds
are home to a wide variety of seasonal special events, heritage
craft activities, school programs, demonstrations and tours. The
restored Pole Barn presents a display of vintage agricultural
tools and illustrates barn construction techniques. The Heritage
Gardens and orchard contain flower, vegetable and fruit varieties
available to the Stewart family a century ago. A great place to
bring a picnic, let the kids run off some energy, or go for a
nature walk on the scenic walking trails.
There
are year round tours by staff and volunteers dressed in Victorian-style
clothing. Unique activities at this historic site include woodstove
cooking, heritage crafts, parlor games, blacksmith demonstrations
and old fashioned fun. Picnics can be held at a nearby park and
trails through meadows, marshland, and forests are available.
A unique experience to be enjoyed by all.
Pole Barn
This heritage barn, also built in 1894, is one of the last of
its kind. Constructed from unmilled lumber, the Pole Barn features
midstrey canopies that allowed a fully loaded hay wagon to be
driven through. The barn stored hay, machinery and originally
housed six draught horses, one bull, one sow and four to six dairy
cows. It is now home to a display of antique agricultural tools.
Boat House Display
This exhibit building depicts life on the Nicomekl River and around
the Crescent Beach area during the 1950s and 1960s. A crab boat
and an original Easthope engine, or 'one lunger', are features
of a display that includes information on the local oyster farming
and crabbing industry, boat building, and fish processing.
Heritage Gardens
These very special gardens boast varieties of flowers, vegetables
and herbs that would have been planted by local farmers 100 or
more years ago, many of them now rare and hard to find. A team
of dedicated volunteers tends the gardens using organic methods.
Visitors are invited to stroll around the beds and enjoy the sight
of pie pumpkins, carrots and heirloom beans, and heritage roses,
snapdragons, calendulas and sunflowers, to name a few of the plants
grown here. Seeds for many of these varieties are usually available
in the spring.
